These joyous paintings have been the mainstay of my work for the past fifteen years, work I usually say is my serious play! I have grown up in art museums, and my mentors come right out of art history. People often say my work is an amalgamation of artists such as Matisse, Van Gogh, Dufy, Bonnard, Niki de Saint Phalle, and Dubuffet. Among living painters, my favorite is David Hockney. These paintings reflect my home environments, my travels, and my memories of place. I love to capture the actual composition of a place, on land or sea. But then I like to interpret it, making up the colors, patterns, complex details, and giving the place unexpected multiple perspectives. Most of these works began outdoors with sketches, but were then painted indoors where the fantasy, whimsey, energy, and complexity take over.
